Staying ahead in the dynamic world of Human Resources (HR) and Human Capital requires continuous adaptation and a deep understanding of emerging trends. At Decusatio Human Capital Solutions, we rely on insights from our Google Analytics and website dashboards to pinpoint what truly matters to businesses today. By analysing these data-driven search trends, we gain valuable knowledge that shapes our HR strategies, ensuring we address the most pressing issues in the industry.
Here are four significant HR trends that have surfaced prominently in our recent analyses:
1. The Real Cost of Sexual Harassment in the Workplace
One of the most searched topics we identified is “The cost of Sexual Harassment in the Workplace.”
This issue extends beyond legal implications; it has serious financial, emotional, and reputational impacts on organizations. Nelly Mohale, our Head of Human Capital, and Ginen Moodley of Moodley Attorneys, have shared their insights on this critical topic in a recent CHRO article: What is the real cost of sexual harassment in the workplace?.
A recent consultation highlights why this is such a topical issue and why organisations need to have mechanisms in place to handle these matters. During the consultation it emerged that during a disciplinary process for a female employee she had encountered inappropriate behaviour from her direct line manager – a charge he acknowledged when presented with the information. When challenged on the matter, the organisation defaulted to the fact that it had policies and procedures in place to handle these matters and these had been covered in their employee induction. The employee then pointed out that they had not yet attended an employee induction.
The follow-up response from the organisation was that they would move the female employee under the supervision of another lady to make reporting issues easier… this doesn’t resolve the issue of providing a safe environment for reporting these matters.
Nelly produced an excellent blog post looking at the importance of employee onboarding. Read it here.
2. The Advantages and Benefits of Workforce Planning
Another key trend that has gained significant attention is “The advantages and benefits of Workforce Planning.”
Effective workforce planning is more than a strategic tool; it’s a necessity for aligning employee skills with business goals, forecasting future needs, and ensuring that organizations remain competitive in their industries. Companies investing in workforce planning are better equipped to manage their talent pipelines, reduce operational costs, and respond flexibly to market demands.
We recently attended a workshop hosted by our partners from BEE123 – they were discussing B-BBEE trends and changes in the Financial Services Sector – and there was excellent presentation from John Botha from Global Business Solutions on the subject of Workforce Planning.
John highlighted statistics which showed that sectors – including the Financial Services Sector – are way behind on transformation goals and will find themselves coming under increased scrutiny unless they accelerate talent pipelines.
3. B-BBEE Skills Development: Driving Transformation
“B-BBEE Skills Development” has emerged as a crucial focus area in recent searches, reflecting the growing importance of empowering South African workforces through targeted development initiatives.
This elevated search trend would make sense considering that we are coming up to the end of the Measurement Period for December year-end businesses. Closing out skills spend and planning for the new year is in full force.
The other consideration here is the Gazetting of the new legal sector codes which has materially impacted certain Skills Development elements on the scorecard and organisations are looking to understand this impact more clearly.
4. Basic HR Solutions for Modern Businesses
The rise in searches related to “Basic HR Solutions” highlights a need for straightforward, practical HR services that cater to businesses of all sizes. From core HR functions like recruitment and onboarding to essential compliance and employee relations, companies are looking for comprehensive yet simplified solutions to address their foundational needs.
The restaurant and hospitality industries in particular have come under scrutiny in the last few months and many of these organisations do not have the in-house skills to stay up to date with changing legislation and business practices. By finding a partner to assist with your outsourced HR, you can focus on running your core business.
