“South Africa loses 345 000 jobs in the first quarter!”
This is the headline which accompanied the release of the latest unemployment figures released in mid-May.
While it is never nice to see the South African economy faltering, there is perhaps a bit of a caveat to these figures – more than 180 000 of these jobs lost were a result of the end of a Presidential Employment stimulation initiative supporting placements in schools – an initiative which is expected to kick in again shortly.
